Vernago al Lago

Located at 1,700 m a.s.l. directly on the shore of the emerald green Lake Vernago, there is the homonymous village

An emerald green lake and snow-capped mountains in the background, this is how Vernago al Lago meets the eyes of its visitors. Not always has the village been located at the shores of a lake, as this artificial water was constructed in the '50s only. Eight farmsteads and a chapel sank in its waters and still today, when the water level is low, you can see the steeple rising out of the waters.

The picturesque surroundings make hiking a real pleasure, no matter if you prefer surrounding the lake by foot, walk to Madonna di Senales or on the High Path from Vernago al Lago to Maso Corto. If you prefer mountain tours, we recommend the hike to the Similaun Mountain Hut (3,019 m a.s.l. - 3.5 hours) in order to explore the place of discovery of Oetzi, the Iceman.

Due to the fact that the Val Senales Glacier is located only a stone's throw from the village, you can perfectly enjoy skiing from autumn to May. Another highlight in Vernago al Lago, that you absolutely have to attend, is the so-called "Schofschoad", which literally translated means "sheep shearing": around mid June thousands of sheep, together with their shepherds, march to the alpine pastures in Austria and come back in autumn. This event is abundantly celebrated in Vernago al Lago.
