Along the irrigation channels of Morter

This circular walk along the irrigation channels of Morter near Laces, leads to the Rautwaal and Neuwaal channels and then past Castle Montani di Sopra. At the end a stop in the Bierkeller tavern at the Mareinwaal must not be missing

This 8 km long walking tour along the irrigation channels (Waalwege) near Morter leads through a varied natural and cultural landscape. Starting point is the village of Morter at the entrance to the Val Martello valley. From the parking space at the fire station we follow the marker no. 23 first towards Blasenegg. The path winds its way through the deciduous forest to the first junction at about 810 m a.s.l., where the Waalweg path starts at the Rautwaal channel.

We follow the Rautwaal towards south. This leisurely path along the burbling water course takes us a little into the Val Martello valley, until the bridge over the Plima river at the origin of the channel. Here we cross the road and follow the Neuwaal. This Waalweg path runs parallel to the Rautwaal on the opposite side of the valley. Soon we reach the turn-off to Montani. We continue until we reach the sunny hill where the Castello Montani di Sopra is located and straight below the chapel of St. Stephan. Both are beautiful witnesses of the past, which we watch from the outside.

Back at the turn-off to the Waalweg path, now we follow the path no. 5A which proceeds down into the valley, to the Bierkeller tavern. It’s lunch time and the tavern is a great place to stop and to enjoy a hearty meal. After our break we start our way back along the Mareinwaal channel through the now blooming orchards to Morter.
