Snowshoe hike from Passo delle Palade to Lago Monte Luco

On this demanding hike you will be rewarded with breathtaking views on the distant Dolomites and the Sarentino Alps

Starting point of our hiking tour is the Passo delle Palade mountain pass (Gampenpass) above Lana. We walk on the forest path that leads directly from the Passo delle Palade to the west towards the Malga Monte Luco mountain hut (Laugenalm). Attention: the path is also used as a sledge run in winter!
After about 500 m we turn right onto the forest path 10B (signpost Laugensee, Laugenspitz), and after another 400 m we take the path on the left at the junction towards the Lago Monte Luco lake (the path on the right leads to the the Gfrillner Alm).

Now the path leads steeply uphill through the forest, on nearly 2 km distance almost 600 metres in altitude must be mastered. A lot of strength is needed for this ascent! Our effort is rewarded for the first time as soon as we reach the timberline, as an enchanting panorama on the Dolomites opens here: from the Latemar Group to the Catinaccio and the Sarentino Alps.

After about 1.5 hours of walking, the time has come: between the peaks of the Monte Luco Grande (2,434 m) and the Monte Luco Piccolo (2,297 m), the frozen Lago Luco lake lies in a hollow. Because we are sure that the lake is frozen solid, we don’t miss the fun and walk across it to the other side.

For the way back we choose path no. 10 via the Malga Monte Luco, which this year (season 2019/2020) is open for the first time on weekends also in winter. From the mountain hut, a forest path, which is also used as a sledge run in winter, leads us back to the starting point again.
