Velloi

Velloi is an ideal starting point for hikes and is located in the transition zone between vineyards and alpine landscape

Velloi includes the territory ranging from 990 to 1,500 m a.s.l. and is located in a landscape that is rife with contrasts. Vineyards on the valley floor, surrounded by high alpine landscape. From Velloi you can by the way enjoy the view on a land art masterpiece made of 80 erratic boulders, located at the clearway exit of the MeBo and representing a stone sun. Worth a visit is also the little church of Velloi, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, dating back to the 19th century. The first church of Velloi, however, was completed in 1742.

Velloi was made accessible rather early, in the 60s and 70s the chairlift from Plars to Velloi were built, and also the quaint basket lift from Velloi to the Leiteralm mountain hut dates back to this period. The entire area surrounding Velloi is rich in hiking trails, from this place you can reach Tirolo, Parcines, Sopranes and the Hochmuth on foot. Worth mentioning is also the so-called “Vellauer Felsenweg” (head for heights requested) as well as the Hans-Frieden trail.

An absolute must for those who have a head for heights is a ride with the basket lift to the Leiteralm, not only for the unique feeling, but also for the astonishing view. The Leiteralm mountain hut (1,550 m), open from March to November, is located at the Merano High Route in the Gruppo di Tessa Nature Park and represents an ideal starting point for high alpine tours. Particularly worthy of note are the Cigat, the Cima Rosa, the Cima Mutta and the Sopranes Lakes.
