Saint Nicholas is also celebrated in Merano and surroundings. He is also part of the Christmas Markets in this area
St. Nicholas is the protector of children and visits German-speaking countries, including South Tyrol, on December 6. He is usually accompanied by Knecht Ruprecht, his assistant.
In many places in South Tyrol, it is traditional for St. Nicholas to arrive at the village market square in a carriage in the late afternoon of December 5 or 6 and distribute small bags filled with sweets to the children. According to legend, the real Saint Nicholas was also very generous and gave gifts of money in socks, which he threw into chimneys to prevent people from committing bad deeds because of their poverty.
