Snowshoe hike to San Maurizio in the Val d’Ultimo

An easy tour in the snowy Val d’Ultimo near the Schwemmalm skiing area

Our tour starts at the parking space near the valley station of the Breiteben lift, directly next to the “alpinLounge W!” (accessible via Pracupola in the Val d'Ultimo). We follow the wide path into the valley which leads towards the mountain inn “Steinrast” (no. 9). During high season this path sectionally is used as toboggan run, in this case we suggest to follow instead the parallel small mountain road. After about 30 minutes we reach the first stage of our round trip. Here the valley becomes wide and flat – in the back we see the dam wall of the Lago Quaira reservoir.

For the following section it's worth it to put on our snow shoes because the narrow path now proceeds through the forest. The marker no. 11 leads us further towards San Maurizio, crosses a piste and reaches the houses around the little church of San Maurizio. On the terrace of the mountain inn we enjoy the view towards the mountains of the Val di Non and a few sunbeams. To complete our circular tour we follow the path no. 11 along the blue piste until our starting point at the parking space.
