The Grand Prix of Merano is a highly remunerated horse race, dating back to the 19th century
Already in 1896 there has been the first horse race in Merano, to the delight of the noble visitors. Since 1935, the opening year of the Maia Bassa Hippodrome, the Gran Prix of Merano fascinates its visitors. Today it is doubtlessly the highlight in the racing season.
Moreover this race is coupled with the National Lottery and since its beginnings it has been remunerated with the highest prize money. This steeplechase is particularly popular also due to the fact that it takes place in sight of the public and can be observed with the naked eye. Also the obstacles such as the fence, water ditch and on-fence are located right in front of the grand stands.
