The Freilichtspiele Lana, a summer event in a class of its own, has been taking place for more than 30 years
The famous open-air theatre festival was launched in 1990 to mark the 1,000th anniversary of Lana. The first in-house production took place in the Gaul Canyon in Lana di Sopra. Since then, it has become a regular and very special feature of the summer events in the Merano region.
Every year in July, the ensemble – made up of amateur and professional actors – stages a play, always in German. Contemporary works ('Romulus the Great', 2018), classic films ('One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest', 2016) and well-known works by Felix Mitterer ('The Piefke Saga', 2023 and 'Verkaufte Heimat', 2025) have already been on the programme. In 2026, 'Die Wanderhure' is performed, a play based on the novel of the same name by Iny Lorentz, directed, as on several previous occasions, by Thomas Hochkofler. The performances take place at various, very special venues, always under the open sky. Tickets are in high demand, and the open-air theatre is almost always sold out.
