At the end of June 2025, the Campus Transhumanz was officially opened in Madonna di Senales (Unser Frau). Transhumance, a UNESCO cultural heritage, is the name given to the sheep drive in Val Senales (Schnalstal). Over two days, shepherds and their sheep cover up to 44 kilometres as they are moved up to the high pastures in summer and back down into the valley in autumn.
The new centre, a dedicated area of the archeoParc Val Senales, aims to become a vibrant place for encounters and knowledge sharing. The heart of the campus is formed by three carefully restored buildings, whose history partly dates back to the 16th century: the Bruggerhof-Stadel, the Schmied-Hütt and the Gorfer-Mühle. A replica of a Venetian saw, based on the model from the Pitairhof farm, completes the ensemble.
Johanna Niederkofler from the archeoParc Val Senales, who will manage the campus, emphasises the project's vision: 'The Campus Transhumanz is more than a museum. It is intended to be a living centre for exchange, encounters and knowledge sharing, all centred on the intangible cultural heritage of transhumance.' In the coming months, the campus will be accessible on Friday afternoons, and all day on Saturdays and Sundays, with the archeoParc ticket.
