To the Formazon-Alm and Lake Seabl

Starting from the hamlet of Außerhütt, we hike along path no. 10 to the Alpe Formazon snack station and through alpine terrain up to the Seabl Lake at 2,265 m a.s.l

In a remote side valley in Alta Val Passiria lies the Formazon Alm mountain hut (also Farmazon Alm), surrounded by green meadows, heath landscape and the bold peaks of the Tessa Group. This is where the first stage of our tour leads. We start in Außerhütt, a hamlet on the road between Plata and Plan in Alta Val Passiria. There is a small car park right next to the bus stop, and here you will also find the first signpost to the Formazon Alm. We follow the forest road uphill through the wood. After about one kilometre, the hiking trail branches off to the left at a bend, crosses the Formazon stream and leads up through the valley to the mountain hut.

After approx. one hour, we have reached the inn. We decide to extend the hike and climb up to the "Seabl", a small lake at 2,265 m a.s.l. But we face a problem: a way to get there is not recognisable and also not marked on any map. The innkeeper gives us the right tip in which direction we have to go. Up the meadow slope, further up we find a kind of trail that is partly recognisable. Following this, we finally reach a plateau directly below Mt. Kolbenspitze - there lies the lonely little mountain lake.

We return along the same route - and of course we stop at the well-visited alpine inn of the Formazon Alm. While the section to the mountain hut can be classified as easy (those who like it even easier can stay on the forest road), the section up to Lake Seabl is a bit more challenging, as it is partly steep and in pathless terrain. Good shoes and hiking poles are essential here.
