Hike to Monte Sant’Anna and San Martino al Monte

Autumn with its milder temperatures is the best season for this beautiful hike on the Monte Sole in the Val Venosta valley, leading from Coldrano via Monte Sant’Anna Castle to the hamlet of San Martino al Monte

Our late autumn hike at the slopes of the Monte Sole (literally "Sun Mountain") starts at the Coldrano train station, one of the stops of the Val Venosta Train. From the roundabout we follow the road towards the Monte Sole, pass under the street and hike on the castle hill towards Coldrano Castle (Via del Castello). Right before we reach the castle, the path no. 6B branches off and leads us to the forest. The path proceeds steeply uphill and turns into a gravel road to Monte Sant'Anna Castle (no. 6).

The castle with its St. Anna Chapel dates back to the 13th century. Passing the ancient walls, we continue our hike uphill. The path no. 6 leads us across steep terrain and follows eroded cart paths which coincide partly with the MTB trails of the surroundings. The last uphill section, however, starts near the Ratschillhof rest point.

The path coincides with the Way of the Cross to the St. Martin Chapel and takes us through the forest to the meadows of the small hamlet of San Martino al Monte. The rest point at the Kaserhöfe farms or the St. Martin Mountain Inn invite to enjoy a deserved break. For the way back we recommend to take the cable car to Laces. From there, you can return to the starting point by train (4 km).
